Home alarm systems have a number of benefits. They detect intruders, fires and carbon monoxide, determine whether smoke, flames or heat is involved and have alarms that sound both inside the home and send a signal to the monitoring center. Despite the benefits, though, sometimes alarm systems can malfunction or cause other problems
.

Failure to Communicate[]

Sometimes the home security system will lose its communication with the central monitoring station. You can check whether the phone lines are down and, if they are not, check to make sure the cord is connected to the phone jack. If all else fails, you will have to call the system's help number for assistance. The repairs may not be difficult. However, a major problem arises if communication fails in the middle of an emergency.

Cost[]

While there are inexpensive and affordable versions of home alarm systems, others can be very pricey. If you live in an isolated area, in a large house or you travel a lot, your best bet is a remotely monitored system. However, they cost about $1,000 to install, with monthly fees of approximately $30. These types of systems also wind up costing about $300 yearly for maintenance.

== Hard Wiring Issues== Although hard-wired systems may be the more secure options, they are also more of a problem to install. They are most convenient for people who are in the process of building their homes, which does limit part of the population. Furthermore, since the hard-wired system has a number of visible components, they need to be frequently inspected and repaired, which results in spending more money as well.

Wireless Problems[]

While wireless systems do not have as many visible components that need to be inspected, they will still have to be serviced, often more than is advertised. They also have a tendency to trigger false alarms, because they work on radio frequencies. Therefore, a police car passing by your house may cause the alarm to sound, and you would never know why it went off.

Keypad Problems[]

In devices containing a keypad, you may find that your PIN codes suddenly do not work. The buttons may be worn out, and the keypad may need to be replaced. You can also change the code so you do not have to press the same worn-out buttons. This is not a major problem in and of itself; however, if it occurs during an emergency, there could be serious issues.
